CC47 – Northwest by North – Films from Fargo / Moorhead (7/11/19)

Filmmakers Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson and Raymond Rea will present experimental non-fiction and animation at July’s installation of Cellular Cinema. Representing the Fargo/Moorhead area, Rea and K-Nelson will share an evening of personal storytelling, exploring family history, genealogy, mythology, memory, immigration, gender, and sexuality.

Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson’s film work has been presented at festivals in Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia. K-Nelson has screened her films at venues such as Slamdance, the Walker Art Center, the D.C. National Museum for Women in the Arts, the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Her work has received awards, including the ICDOC Kodak Vision Award for Best Cinematography, Ann Arbor Film Festival’s Griot Editorial Best Editing Award, and the UFVA Award of Merit for Documentary Filmmaking. Her films explore issues including memory and landscape, and often navigates modes of image making between experimental documentary or animated documentary practice. She is currently a Professor of Film at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Raymond Rea is a filmmaker and writer. He worked for over a decade with San Francisco’s Theatre Rhubarb, a company dedicated to staging rarely seen and risk-taking theatre works. His own production company, Density Over Duration, has produced 8 stage works, 8 short films and an experimental narrative feature. His film and video work has screened nationally and internationally. Ray’s writing has been produced at EXIT Stage Left, EXIT Mainstage, BUILD and the Theatre Rhino in San Francisco. Grants include awards from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, The Vermont Council on the Arts, The Film Arts Foundation (Personal Works), among others. Ray lives in Moorhead, MN where he founded and directs the F-M LGBT Film Festival and is a Professor of Film in the School of Media Arts & Design at Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
